چکیده

A Melitz-style model of monopolistic competition with heterogeneous firms is integrated into a simple NEG model to show that the standard assumption of identical firms is neither necessary nor innocuous. We show that re-locating to the big region is most attractive for the most productivity firms; this implies interesting results for empirical work and policy analysis. A ‘selection effect’ means standard empirical measures overestimate agglomeration economies. A ‘sorting effect’ means that a regional policy induces the highest productivity firms to move to the core while the lowest productivity firms to move to the periphery. We also show that heterogeneity dampens the home market effect. JEL H32, P16.

Heterogeneous Transport Costs and Spatial Sorting in a Model of New Economic Geography

Transportation costs are of central importance in the New Economic Geography literature, though assumptions about transportation costs continue to be simplistic. This paper begins to address these simplifications by assuming that transportation costs for manufactured goods are heterogeneous. Basic results are consistent with standard models showing dispersion of economic activity for high trans...

Location Fundamentals, Agglomeration Economies, and the Geography of Multinational Firms

Multinationals exhibit distinct agglomeration patterns which have transformed the global landscape of industrial production (Alfaro and Chen, 2014). Using a unique worldwide plant-level dataset that reports detailed location, ownership, and operation information for plants in over 100 countries, we construct a spatially continuous index of pairwise-industry agglomeration and investigate the pat...

Productivity, Density, and Sorting

The strong, positive relationship between productivity and density has been used as evidence for the existence of agglomeration forces such as productivity spillovers. This paper presents an alternative hypothesis: In an economic geography model where firms choose locations to be close to their markets, sorting endogenously generates the density-productivity relationship in the absence of any p...
